The starter is only operational for a few seconds when the ignition or key is turned. Its purpose is strictly to cycle the rotating assembly inside the engine (pistons, connecting rods, & crank shaft) to produce compression to allow the air/fuel mixture to be combustible.

Typically, a starter will last over 100,000 miles; so this shouldn’t be a frequent repair unless there are other issues with your car. 

Normal wear and tear, particularly high heat or damage to the flywheel/pinion of a gear can prevent a starter from functioning. However, a starter issue could also signal an underlying electrical problem.
